New York State requirements
If you are considering building a home, a new accessory structure or a commercial property, you will need to obtain a building permit from the local municipal building department. A building permit ensures that you are following New York State building codes. In addition, your construction will be inspected for compliance with your local zoning and building regulations.
When applying for a building permit, you must have three sets of construction documents. These include the building plan, the foundation plan and the electrical and plumbing plans. You will also need to have a licensed professional engineer or architect to certify your plans.
If you don’t have these documents, your permit may not be approved. However, there are exceptions. The building inspector will not accept a permit request if the proposed plans violate a zoning ordinance. Similarly, if the proposed plans don’t conform to the Energy Conservation Construction Code of New York State, the permit will be denied.
